Description

Rectangular wooden coffin, which is now dismantled. This coffin is from grave 217 at Tarkhan, which was excavated by the British School of Archaeology in Egypt (BSAE) during the 1911–12 season. The excavation report mentions "an instance of a coffin in a recess, with ropes still around it" as being found in grave 217, which possibly dates to the Fourth Dynasty. The object was gifted to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by John Bancroft Willans, a subscriber of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt, who received the object in 1913. Subsequently gifted to the Egypt Centre in 1997.
