Description

Large shouldered jar with a round base, a short cylindrical neck and a rolled outside rim. This vessel is made of Nile C. The surface of the jar is crumbling, with much off the original surface having fallen off, due to water damage while in the ground. A small bag containing mud that was attached to the jar is stored with this object, as well as a large section of mud and sand which is still attached to the jar. Some residue of the original surface remains on the jar, showing that there was originally a red slip. Excavated by the British School of Archaeology in Egypt at the site of Tarkhan during the 1911–12 season. The object was gifted to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by John Bancroft Willans, a subscriber of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt, who received the object in 1912. Subsequently gifted to the Egypt Centre in 1997.
