Description

An anhydrite ointment jar from Abydos (Aston type 159). It dates to the Second Intermediate Period. Most anhydrite dates from the Middle Kingdom to the Second Intermediate Period. The exact source of the stone is unknown but it probably came from mines near the Nile Valley. It was purchased by Wellcome from the Berens collection in 1923.
