- Description
-
An anhydrite ointment jar from Abydos (Aston type 159). It dates to the Second Intermediate Period. Most anhydrite dates from the Middle Kingdom to the Second Intermediate Period. The exact source of the stone is unknown but it probably came from mines near the Nile Valley. It was purchased by Wellcome at auction in 1923. As this is labelled Abydos 1904 on the base, it assumed to come from Petrie's 1904 excavations sponsored by the Egypt Exploration Society, though 1904 may alternatively refer to the purchase date.
