- Description
-
A mummy label in shape of a tabula ansata. There are two lines of writing, and two holes, one in each side. It is possibly from Akhmim(?). It records the death of Ammonari(on), aged twenty-five years. Such labels were put on the bodies of the dead who had died away from home by the transporters in order to facilitate identification. They were used in the Graeco-Roman Period. This example was purchased by Wellcome from the MacGregor collection in 1922.
