Description

Medium-sized, cylindrical pottery jar of Marl clay with flat base and rolled rim. The vessel is coil-made with a wheel-turned rim. The exterior is dry-smoothed. Cylindrical vessels are typical for the proto-dynastic and Early Dynastic Periods. This particular example dates to the early First Dynasty before the reign of King Den. Excavated by the British School of Archaeology in Egypt at the site of Tarkhan during the 1911–12 season. The object was gifted to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by John Bancroft Willans, a subscriber of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt, who received the object in 1912. Subsequently gifted to the Egypt Centre in 1997.
