Description

A shroud-wrapped mummiform shabti in green faience. There is a chip off the back of its head and the feet missing. The figure wears a plain tripartite wig and a plaited divine beard. The hands emerge from a shroud to hold a pick in the left and a hoe in the right. The right hand also holds the twisted rope for a basket that is carried behind the left shoulder. The face is quite well worked with good details of the eyes, nose, and smiling mouth. The ears protrude over the side lappets of the wig. The shabti is supported by a dorsal pillar. The front of the figure has a vertical column of a crudely incised inscription. The inscriptions reads "words spoken by the Osiris Wennefer, son of Sobek(?), made by the Mistress of the House Ta-...". It was a gift from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Shabtis were put in tombs to do work for their owners in the afterlife. Occasionally also they were placed posthumously in temples and other sacred places so that the owner could take part in the festivals.
